Ecuador's artisanal fisheries are facing a major bycatch problem, with endangered species like sharks and sea turtles often caught unintentionally. This threatens vulnerable populations and affects the livelihoods of small-scale fishers. Economic pressures and traditional practices further complicate the issue, highlighting the need for innovative solutions.

The project's main solution involves testing and implementing Bycatch Reduction Technologies (BRTs), such as LED lights and electromagnetic devices, in fishing gear. These technologies aim to reduce bycatch of endangered species while maintaining catches of commercially important fish. The project also includes workshops and a human-centered design study to engage fishing communities for sustainable adoption.
